In February 2013 a draft master plan for Gateway Kintore was submitted to Aberdeenshire Council along with a petition bearing more than 1,000 names. The petition called for the plans to be put before councillors.

After a long battle and support from many in the local community the Gateway Kintore site was included in the 2016 Local Plan.

The figures don't stack up

This table shows Aberdeenshire towns, their populations and the number of supermarkets and filling stations they have.

Kintore's population is currently 4,447 – but must be expected to increase to 6,700 in the near future (based on 1,000 new homes at the UK average of 2.3 people per house).

Kintore lagging in terms of facilities

In the table above you can clearly see how Kintore is lagging behind other towns in Aberdeenshire.

Take Huntly, for example. It has a very similar population and it has not one, but two supermarkets – an ASDA and a Tesco. Both are on the A96 trunk road to servicing the wider area, just like the proposed store at Gateway Kintore.

Inverurie and Westhill have between 2.5 and three times the population of Kintore. But each has three supermarkets and a choice of filling stations and restaurants.

It is time for Aberdeenshire Council to listen to the people and get the Gateway Kintore plans on the table!

…and yet more houses are planned!

It seems as though planners have not yet caught up with the growth of Kintore.

At one time the fastest-growing town in Scotland, Kintore now has a population of 4,447 and an additional 1,000 to 1,200 houses are proposed.

Based on the UK average of 2.3 people per house, that will take Kintore's population to 6,700 to 7,200.

For shopping trips, or even to fill the car people living in the vicinity of Kintore have to travel to Inverurie, or Aberdeen.

The time to start planning the facilities we need for a growing population should have been years ago. This is now a game of catch-up!
